Belter of a winter lock: Gold-standard bike security you wear around your waist

hiplok reflective bike lock

Slinging a bicycle lock across the shoulder isn’t a new idea; couriers have been doing it for years. However, Hiplok refined the concept by covering the chain with a sheath that keeps clothes muck-free and is adjustable so it can be worn like a belt.

The logic behind carrying a bike lock in this way makes sense; there’s no need to take a bag with you, and the weight of the lock is transferred from your back and shoulders to your hips.

At 2.2 KG the lock is far from light, but there’s a Sold Secure gold rating in its favour and the reflective cover is a useful touch.

gold rated hiplok

The wearable Hiplok design can be worn as a belt (30-44″ waist) or slung across your shoulder

Win a gold-standard bike security worth £100

We have a Hiplok gold-standard bike chain with a reflective to give away. To be in with a chance of winning, simply leave us a comment below.

Whether you opt for a chain or a D-lock, don’t forget the basics:

DO: Lock your bike through its frame to an immovable object

do: lock through the frame

Make sure your Sold Secure approved lock passes through the frame of your bike and an immovable object. The term immovable object is self-explanatory, but ETA cycle insurance defines it as ‘any solid object fixed in or on to concrete or stone, which is not capable of being undone, removed with, or lifted over/under the bicycle’.

DON’T: Makes things easy for bike thieves

don't- lock to post

We receive numerous claims each year where a bicycle has been left  like this. Look closely – it’s not secured at all.

DON’T: Lock through the front wheel

DON'T - through wheel

An easy mistake to make, but locking your bike through its front wheel is a no-no.

DON’T: Rely on a security cable

Don't security cable only

Most cable locks offer very little protection. It’s confusing because some Sold Secure rated D-locks come with a cable lock, but these are intended to secure wheels and helmets.

I’ve seen so many ebikes & expensive bikes locked with such poor quality locks, I’m surprised more haven’t been stolen.

    Hiplok gold-standard bike chain. Hmmm…

Nicely designed to double up a reflective “Sam Browne” belt. Gives that extra few centimetres to lock to an immovable object which is out of reach for the average U-Lock. Gold Standard presumably means it with withstand angle grinder for at least a minute or two?

Yes I would like to test it out.

In the world of locks, it’s a star,
Hiplok’s taken it up a notch by far,
    No bag to tote,
    Just wrap ‘round your coat,
Hiplok’s a bike lock setting the bar.

With a chain that’s shielded and neat,
Your clothes stay all clean, can’t be beat!
On your hip it’s a sight,
    Bringing joy and delight,
A Hiplok with gold rating, quite a feat!
