Cycle insurance cover for (almost) every type of rider

London cycling commute

We’re no run-of-the-mill cycle insurance provider. The ETA has been providing specialist cycle insurance in the UK longer than anyone else, and year after year we’re rated Britain’s most ethical provider by The Good Shopping Guide. In other words, your bike’s in safe hands when you choose to cover it with us.

Everyday cyclists

We don’t care much for labels. After all, cycling’s a simple pleasure. A bike can be acquired for next to nothing, and you don’t need a licence or specialist equipment. Whether you’re popping to the shops, trundling around the park or doing something sporty, the only important bit is the ride.

With only a few exceptions (sorry, we can’t cover courier work and other types of professional cycling), our fully-comprehensive cover offers great cover whatever riding you enjoy: Commuter; park pootler; roadie; e-bik e-bike convert – we welcome you all.

There are many ways our insurance cover stands out from the crowd. For example, if your bicycle is stolen, we don’t devalue it no matter its age. And we were the first people in the UK to offer a breakdown service for cyclists so we include it with our cycle insurance at no extra cost.

Commuter

Thieves know where to find the best bikes. They target garden sheds as well as bike racks near places of work. And when defeated by bike locks, they’ve taken to pinching saddles, wheels and shifters – anything they can remove and sell.

We cover this type of theft including quick-release components. And we don’t require a specific level of security for shed locks or garages – only that the door is locked and the bike is out of sight if visible through a window.

Correctly secured bikes can be left in public places for up to 12 hours at a time, or 24 hours at a railway station.
We also include £2m third party cover as standard to protect you if you are unfortunate enough to collide with a pedestrian, another cyclist or a vehicle while riding.

We include Cycle Rescue cover to keep you going whether you’ve suffered a flat or any mechanical breakdown.

Cargo bikes and trikes

Cargo bikes offer a clean, quiet and cost effective way to carry stuff that’s too bulky for a conventional bicycle. However, the fact they’re bigger and heavier can make a breakdown troublesome. Even the shortest journey comes to an abrupt halt in the event of a flat tyre, broken chain or buckled wheel and carrying kids or cargo adds an unwelcome dimension to being stuck.

tern GSD small-wheeled utility bicycle

The Tern GSD is beautifully conceived – a bike designed to carry two kids, a week’s worth of groceries or 180 kg of cargo while at the same time remaining narrow enough to wheel through a house if necessary.

Insure your cargo bike with us and top of a list of great benefits, you’ll get the peace of mind offered by our  Cycle Rescue  – the first breakdown cover policy for bicycles and one that covers cargo bikes recumbents and tandems.

If you suffer a breakdown (including punctures) while out cycling, or are unable to continue due to an injury, our 24-hour Cycle Rescue team is on hand to arrange transport for you and your cycle to a safe location.

Folding bike rider

Brompton. Tern. Dahon. B’Twin. Whichever folder you ride, we can cover it.

Folding bikes hold their value, which makes them especially attractive to thieves. Not only will a good policy protect you against theft, but you’ll be compensated for accidental damage and get third party cover at no additional cost.

Better still, we offer a discount of 20% insurance on all folding bikes.

Cycle tourer

If you take your bicycle on holiday with the family, travel to sporting events across Europe, or go cycle touring further afield, ETA cycle insurance extends cover for theft, accidental damage and vandalism to Europe for 90 days and worldwide for 60 days per year. The policy covers your bike for damage caused while in the care of an airline, rail or coach operator.

Sports cyclist

We cover cycles up to the value of £15,000 per bike. Our cycle insurance covers against theft, accidental damage and vandalism when you’re training for, or competing in, races, sportives and other mass-participation, non-professional events. During triathlon events, the insurance covers your bike while in the transition zone as long as the area’s supervised by a marshal.

Mountain bike insurance

Whether you use a mountain bike for racing, recreation or commuting, you enjoy the full list of benefits available to every ETA cycle insurance policy holder. We’re happy to cover bikes you’ve built yourself, and we cover stolen parts and accidental damage as standard.

Electric bicycles, e-bikes and pedelecs

It’s little wonder so many e-bike owners opt for insurance cover. Electric-assist cycles are pricey – even their batteries can cost £500 to replace if they’re pinched.

However, while most cycle insurance providers now cover ebikes as standard, their policies all differ – not least in how they’ll calculate your settlement in the event of a claim.

For example, some insurance providers boast about replacing stolen bicycles on a new-for-old basis, but read the small print and you soon discover all is not as it seems; in some cases, once your bike is 3 years old it no longer qualifies for new-for-old replacement, while other providers exclude second-hand bikes.

Here at ETA cycle insurance, we don’t think that’s right. We never devalue bikes in that way – no matter their age.

ETA cycle insurance covers all road-legal electric bicycles, e-bikes and pedelecs as standard. If your e-bike does not exceed 250 W/15.5 mph, it can be covered under our cycle insurance. Your battery is covered against theft and we provide Cycle Rescue cover, which includes flat batteries.

Custom, vintage and self-build bikes

We build our own custom bicycles, so we have first-hand experience of how precious they are. We don’t charge extra for custom, vintage or self-built bikes. If you have an unusual bike you would like to cover we would love to hear from you.

The ethical choice

The ETA was established in 1990 as an ethical provider of green, reliable travel services. Over 30 years on, we continue to offer cycle insurance , breakdown cover  and mobility scooter insurance while putting concern for the environment at the heart of all we do.

The Good Shopping Guide judges us to be the UK’s most ethical provider.
