Hovding cycle helmet airbag offered by insurer

One lucky British cyclist this summer will win a cycling airbag that cost £10m to develop.

The Hövding is the world’s first cycling airbag and is up for grabs in a free prize draw organised by leading bike insurer, the ETA.

Worn like a collar, the airbag’s sensors record its wearer’s movements 200 times a second and, in the event of an impending collision, it inflates in one tenth of a second into the shape of an over-sized motorcycle helmet.

When the Swedish-designed Hövding was tested against 13 of the leading cycle helmets, it proved to have more than three times better shock absorbency than conventional helmets.

A spokesperson for the ETA, which has been assessing the high-tech airbag, said: “We believe the Hovding airbag provides an unobtrusive and efficient alternative to a conventional cycle helmet for those who choose to wear protective gear.”
