Audi hybrid combines balance bike with scooter

When car makers put their name to a bicycle, it usually involves little more than the re-badging of an existing bike, but the latest offering from Audi appears to be a genuine innovation.

The Audi Mini Runner is a balance bike that can be transformed into a scooter in just a few moments.

As you might expect from a company that prides itself on technological innovation, the frame is ‘hydroformed’ from aluminium and features an integrated brake, which works both as a balance bike and as a scooter.

The Mini Runner can be used by children aged from three to eight.

Childrens’ scooters have enjoyed a huge renaissance in recent years. The three-wheeled variety in particular allows children as young as three the chance to experience freedom, independence and speed.

Balance bikes are bicycles without pedals. They allow children to master the tricky skills of balancing and steering without the added complication and distraction of pedalling at the same time.

The idea of combining these two useful vehicles into one is clever, but the Audi is expensive. The Mini Runner costs an eye-watering £279 – far more than a top-of-the-range scooter and balance bike bought separately.

Cycle insurance from the ETA covers against theft, accidental damage and vandalism. It also includes, at no extra cost, £1m third party, no devaluation, shed and garage cover, friends and family cover, Cycle Rescue, 90 days’ European and 60 days’ worldwide cover and a low excess.
