A growing number of urban and adventure cyclists clip cameras to their bikes and helmets, but a new design of protective headgear that goes on sale next month has a video cam built into its shell.

Urban commuters use helmet cams to record evidence in the event they are knocked off by a car while mountain bikers and BMX riders like to film their descents and jumps, but both groups put their cameras at risk if they crash.

Video Head helmets have a camera built straight into the helmet. The camera is protected from damage and it’s less likely to be stolen than a camera fited to your bike’s handlebars and that you might forget to remove.

With a push of a button, the wearer can record his or her ride through a city, over a trail or off of a jump.

The Helmet Hair design, which is intended to be worn by both men and women, was inspired by cycle helmet research carried out by Bath University. The study revealed that car drivers leave less room when overtaking a cyclist wearing a helmet, but a much wider berth when passing a female rider with long hair.
The Hövding is a winter jacket with an airbag cycle helmet incorporated into its collar. In the event of a collision, a motion sensor activates a small cannister of helium, which inflates the airbag in one tenth of a second.
