Cycling jackets go inflatable

A new design of cycling top can transform itself from a lightweight windcheater to a fully-insulated winter jacket with a few squeezes of a hand pump.

Getting your clothing for a ride right usually involves building up layers, which can be removed when you get hot and replaced if the weather changes. The Klymit Ulaar jacket uses air pockets to provide adjustable insulation. When its air chambers are inflated, the jacket hugs the torso and maintains heat even when wet.

A small hand pump inflates the chambers, but for extra kudos as you prepare to descend Alpe D’Huez, the jacket can be filled with Argon gas from a tiny canister that it is claimed further improves the insulating properties of the jacket.

The makers of the jacket are currently seeking advance orders to fund its production.

Inflatable bicycle bags

Entrusting a bicycle into the care of a coach company, rail operator or airline can be a fraught experience and tales of bent wheels, scratched paint and damaged components abound.

If you have a receipt of carriage from your carrier, cycle insurance from the ETA will pay for damage sustained during transit, but that can seem of little consolation if you lose the first day of your holiday arranging for the bicycle to be repaired or trying to find a suitable hire bike.

The Biknd Helium inflatable case offers an impressive degree of inflatable protection. It weighs in at 11 kg on the scales and £425 at the till.

Good insulation needed to protect from cold air pumped in. However it will warm under pressure but could become restrictive to blood flow causing hypothyrmia.
