My bicycle’s been stolen – what happens now?

If you’ve been unfortunate enough to have a bicycle stolen, you’ll remember the feeling; disbelief as you stare at the empty space, anger at the ne’er-do-wells who are now riding your pride and worry over how quickly the bike can be replaced.

The sense of relief that you are covered against theft can be tempered by concern that the insurer will drag their feet, or try and wriggle out of the claim entirely, but according to the ETA their customers can have successful claims settled in as few as three days if the claim form is completed correctly.

The two most common causes of delayed cycle insurance claims are failure to provide proof of ownership of the cycle and the correct approved lock.

What do I need to provide as proof of ownership of my cycle?

Proof of bike ownership Provide one of the following
. Original purchase receipt
or Letter on headed paper from the cycle shop confirming purchase, make and model purchased, the date of purchase and the amount paid
or Valuation letter (dated and on headed paper) from a cycle shop confirming its value and what its replacement value would now be
or Cycle to Work scheme documents (must mention make and model)
or Ebay / Pay Pal documentation confirming sale (must mention make and model)
or Letter from seller (if a second hand sale), confirming sale, make and model, date and amount paid

What do I need to provide as proof of ownership of my lock?

Proof of lock ownership Provide one of the following
. Original purchase receipt
or Letter on headed paper from the cycle shop confirming purchase, make and model purchased, the date of purchase and the amount paid
or Ebay / Pay Pal documentation confirming sale (must mention make and model)
or Photographs of lock (1 showing it locked to the cycle, 1 showing it close up), photo needs to be dated and sent in to us to place on your customer file, please send photos to claims@eta.co.uk
