DIY bicycle water bottle cage costs pennies

The lightest carbon fibre bicycle water bottle cages cost over £100, but even the £5 charged for the most basic types seems expensive when you can make your own in twenty minutes for pennies.

The excellent DIY website instructables.com offers a free step-by-step guide on how to make your own water bottles carrier using a coat hanger, a few screws and a couple of washers.

Instructables.com is an open source directory of DIY plans and boasts a particularly good section on cycling. The coat hanger bottle cage represents one of the more simple projects – more ambitious builders can use the site to build their own bicycle trailer or even a pair of high-heel clipless bike shoes.

A part-time inventor who wanted to make cycling in heels a more practical proposition for his girlfriend has published free plans on how to make your own high-heels with a clip-less cleat.

Contributor to the DIY website Instructables.com, Corwin, spent 18 months designing and making the shoes, a length of time he describes as having outlasted his relationship.

He is keen, however, that this detail not dissuade potential shoe makers: “If I had worked straight though on the project, it would have only taken a few months, and if you can make these shoes, you are probably capable of not losing the relationship with a wonderful girl.”
