The world’s most elegant bicycle wheels

People may have been building simple devices to create the image of a moving picture for over 2,000 years, but even today the effect of placing simple paper shapes on a moving wheel is no less magical.

As part of a third year dissertation, design student, Katy Beveridge, has produced a film on rudimentary animation that is causing a stir on Youtube. The film shows the results of placing simple paper shapes on a revolving bicycle wheel.

Wheel flowers

The industrial designer, artist and architect, Ron Arad recently re-interpreted the bicycle wheel in his medium of choice, steel. The wheels are made from ribbons of stainless steel that have been looped and stapled together in an elegant flower petal design

Cycle insurance up for renewal?
The earliest device to create the image of a moving picture was created over 2,200 years ago. Made from translucent paper, it was hung over a lamp where the rising air would cause it to turn and the pictures painted on the panels would appear to move. A thaumatrope was a small circular disk with two different pictures on each side threaded onto a pair of strings running through its centre. When twirled between the fingers, the two pictures appear to combine into a single image. It demonstrates the Phi phenomenon, the brain’s ability to persistently perceive an image.
