The world’s first all-electric limousine

Hollywood actors and environmentally-aware hen parties have extra cause to celebrate today with news that the Nissan Leaf is to be available as the world’s first all-electric stretched limousine.

Many of the stars arriving at the Oscars now forgo a conventional stretched limo in favour of a hybrid vehicle, but not to be outdone by the stretched eight-seater Toyota Prius hybrid, pictured right, American electric vehicle conversion specialist The Electric Car Company has been commissioned to convert an all-electric Nissan LEAF into a limousine.

The standard Nissan Leaf will have a four-foot section added to its body, which will double the rear seating capacity from three to six passengers.

A practical electric car

In its standard, non-stretched form, the Leaf can reach 62mph in less than 10 seconds and its top speed is 90mph.

Its battery pack offers a 100-mile operating range in town. A full charge takes eight hours, but the batteries can be charged to 80% capacity in 30 minutes with a fast charger.

The first British customers have already taken delivery of LEAFs and European production of the car and its batteries will start in Sunderland in 2013.
