World’s first heads-up GPS for bicycles

The world’s first goggles that show GPS information on a micro-LCD heads-up display inside the lens could prove a useful piece of kit for cyclists.

The Recon/Zeal goggles have been developed for snowboarders, but instant access to data on location, speed, altitude and temperature without the need to look away from the road or track ahead will be useful for many cyclists.

The design is similar to conventional goggles with the exception of buttons mounted on the frame that allow the user to scroll through the various functions.

The goggles cost around £285 or £350 with a photochromic lens, which adjusts automatically to changing light conditions.

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “Handlebar-mounted cycle computers are vulnerable to damage and theft, and another advantage of heads-up displays is that when you are riding hard you can keep your eye on what’s in front of you.”

Cycle insurance from the ETA includes new-for-old replacement if your bike is stolen, cover for accidental damage (race events included), third party insurance (in the case of an accident you may need to seek compensation or even deal with a claim by someone else), personal accident cover and if you breakdown, they will even come out and recover you and your bike.
