Police step up bike theft battle

Police in Swindon have unveiled plans to crack down on bike theft. According to officers, mountain bikes have been stolen to order Walcot and the Parks .

Community beat officer PC Matt Barnett said: “There has recently been a rise in the theft of low and high value bikes … many of these are stolen to order as people are moving them on very quickly.

“We might get descriptions of offenders from CCTV and witnesses but when we go round there the bikes have gone. It’s very easy to move these bikes on. We don’t want criminals making money out of this. We want to make it less attractive for the criminals.”

The police have set up a new database on which to store bike details and security markings that are only visible under UV light in order to help them identify stolen bicycles.

However, those wanting extra security for their bicycles should consider taking out bike insurance.

Insurance for bicycles

Bikes are particularly vulnerable to theft – it’s the reason that an estimated 500,000 bikes are stolen each year in Britain. Furthermore, in the case of an accident cyclists may need to seek compensation or even deal with a claim by someone else. Cycle insurance from the ETA is fully comprehensive.

At no extra cost, it includes new-for-old replacement, cover for accidental damage, third party insurance, personal accident cover and if you breakdown, a van comes out to recover you and your bike.
