Carbon Offset

Looking through our customer records it has been heartening to see the number of people who have been offsetting for their carbon emissions even in these straightened times.

I know that there is a great debate about offsetting in principle and also in the reliability of the processes used. However, if we all did it there would be a dramatic change to our how we live. In a sense, the change would be as radical a transformation as when we moved from taxing soap and windows to using VAT.

Some members offset particular journeys and others go the full hog with citizen offset. At the ETA, we have set this as just over twelve tons of CO2 equivalent. This underestimates the amount of CO2 that we, in this country, cause to be produced. Britain imports many products which have been made elsewhere. The CO2 is produced where the products are made not where they are bought. Some say that we should increase our average CO2 rate to around 17 tons per person to include all these manufactured goods.

You can check out your own CO2 and adjust your offsetting accordingly if you wish.
