Casquettes have been worn for almost as long as there has been competitive cycling, but since helmets became compulsory for races, the humble cycling cap risks becoming little more than a fashion accessory. This is a shame because they are as practical as they are stylish. The short peak can be turned up or down providing shade from sunlight and shielding eyes from rain.
Route is an ethical cycle wear label based in Scotland that is helping to keep the cycling cap alive. Their caps are handmade in Glasgow using Harris Tweed, bamboo silk and organic fair trade cotton.
We’re fans of the company’s free ‘repair or replace’ service to keep its clothing in use for as long as possible. Customers can return any Route product in need of repair. If they can’t fix the problem, they recycle the item into something else and send you a replacement.
Chapeau! Win a Route Clothing cycling cap
Featuring a double cotton construction to give added protection from the wind, this is the £28 Route Clothing floral cap. The light-weight cotton is breathable helping to keep the worst of the cold out when you want it, and releasing excess heat when you need it. A cotton sweat band helps wick sweat away from your head and keeping you cool on hot days. We have one to give away – leave us a comment below and we’ll pick a name out of the hat.

If thin enough these hats can be a good windbreak to use when cycling in winter (to keep head warmer) and also in summer probably can soak in cold water to keep head cooler.

Perfect for a ride in the country!

I’d like to think that you really are going to pick names out of this very hat.

Apart from baseball being less suitable, baseball caps are American in origin, and I would prefer to support a home country’s style.
Roger Kay
I like the look of these ‘casquettes’.
Would love to try one, but I’m about broke! So hope I’m the lucky winner!
Currently in a hot part of France, and usually where a cycle helmet but some days its just too hot, and on many cycle routes, the risk factor is very small for not wearing a helmet.

I adorn my head with a cap whenever I cycle, they perfect for absorbing large quantities of sweat as I ride from the city, North towards the countryside. I like to watch the little droplets cascade down from the peak and shower my GPS with that salty potion as I wait at traffic lights.
This post will not win me a cap, it is quite weird.
Cap.

Looks much better than the baseball cap I often wear, which has a tendency to lift off in a wind or downhill at 30mph!
Greg
Just the thing for my Glasgow commute

Anthony Rogers
The pictured hat with flowers looks ideal for my daughter. A must ‘pick out.’
James Booth
You can still wear one under a helmet.

Routeclothing should make a casquette that would cover a cycling helmet, thus the cyclist would be both chic and safe. regards, Clarke
