Joel Allen inadvertently became a champion for tree houses when, aged 26, he packed up his career as a software engineer and decided to turn his hand to carpentry and a tree house project with which to hine his new skills. Surrounded by the stunning Canadian wilderness, there was no shortage of space in which to build, but with parcels of land changing hands for $1m and no money of his own, Joel was forced to rely on ingenuity and good fortune – both great foundations for any tree house project.

Looking back Joel admits that I really believe that naivety was the mother of all invention. If I he stopped for a brief moment to consider the practicalities, costs, or logistics of building an experimental tree house orb on crown land, the project would never have happened.

Working with volunteers, donated materials and in secret on crown land beneath some of the richest mountain homes in Western Canada, Joel constructed an enchanting tree house that went to win architectural plaudits around the world.
