Jolt: The cycle helmet accessory that signals concussion

The Jolt is a new high-tech helmet accessory that promises to let its wearer know whether a blow to their head is likely to lead to a concussion.

Cycle helmets vary in size, shape and colour, but almost without exception they comprise a layer of polystyrene covered by a thin plastic shell. This lightweight construction is one of the reasons there is much debate over the efficacy of cycle helmets – arguments that may be further fuelled by this sort of rudimentary diagnostic technology.

The Jolt sensor is a small clip that attaches to any helmet. Worn agaiinst the scalp, the sensor enclosure has a soft rounded silicone rubber exterior for comfort and is fully waterproofed to stand up to dirt, dust, sweat, and rain. It has a battery life of many weeks and can be charged via a standard micro USB port.

When the wearer’s head accelerates in a potentially dangerous way, the sensor vibrates and sends a message to a nominated smartphone.

The Jolt is intended for anybody involved in activities that risk a blow to the head, but rugby players and cyclists alike may decide that any benefits are outweighted by the potential risk associated with wearing a solid object against the skull. The safety of helmet cams has been questioned over fears that the body of the camera could act like a punch in the event of a crash.
