iHat: Safer sounds for cycling?

No one can say for certain whether it’s dangerous to cycle while wearing headphones, but whatever the case, you can hedge your bets with the iHat – a beanie with built-in speakers that keeps your head warm and more than likely allows you to hear more of what’s going on around you while you listen to music.

At around £10 from Amazon, the iHat makes a great stocking filler for the cyclist/ jogger/moody teenager in your family.

Do you listen to music while cycling?

Do you think it’s dangerous?

And can you wear a helmet over it? If not, how is it safer than a pair of headphones? Just avoid the ear-bud types with the rubber grommets, the older style in-ear type allow you to hear a lot more of what’s around you.

Whether it is dangerous to wear headphones when cycling surely depends on how loud you have the headphones? If they blot out all other sounds, definitely a problem. If not, then fine. Of possibly more concern is that this hat assumes that no helmet is worn. Headphones full blast and no helmet would not be a good combination.

A riduculous, dangerous idea if ever there was one .. anything that impairs the senses of a rider has to be a no-no ..

I tried riding with an Ipod many years back (just out around the country lanes I may add) and it was incredibly distracting, I never did it again. In my opinion riders seen with Ipods, etc, earphones in, PARTICULARLY IN URBAN AREAS should be charged by the police in the same way that drivers usign mobile phones SUPPOSEDLY are ..

Very irresponsible. (I’m someone who owns 4 bikes and rides every day).

I ride every day, rain or shine. I do not drive a car. I do wear headphones, as i cant stand the sound of traffic. I am uncomfortable w hearing traffic behind me, it makes me nervous. Therefore, i do the headphones. I always look befire i make turns, and always use hand signals. I will never go without my ipod. It helps me focus. If i were to be charged, i wouldnt pay the fine nor would i stop.
