Dramatic footage of a car being pushed along a motorway by tanker lorry, the driver of which seemingly unaware of the situation, is a reminder of the danger posed by vehicles with blind spots.
According to police who confirm they attended an incident On January 13 on the southbound A1 near Wetherby involving a blue Renault Clio and a HGV, no one was injured in the incident.
The footage below has not been confirmed as genuine, but it does serve as a general reminder of the risk posed by heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to other road users, particularly to cyclists in towns.
Large lorries pose a disproportionately high risk to cyclists because they have large blind spots, or areas that the driver is unable to see clearly.
Of particular danger are the areas directly in front of the cab and the near side of a left-turning lorry.

How can cyclists stay safe?
A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “Specially-designed safety mirrors can minimize a lorry’s blind spots, but the best piece of advice for cyclists in towns and cities is to give lorries, coaches and buses a wide berth. At junctions and side turnings be aware of lorries approaching from behind on the road that may be about to turn left and at lights do not position yourself directly in front of large vehicles – the driver may pull away without having seen you.”
