Amphibious bus splutters back into action

Trials of an amphibious bus have resumed after it broke down on Monday after only one hour’s use. Stagecoach hopes to use the “amfibus” to run a combined bus and ferry service on the River Clyde.

The AmphiCoach is almost indistinguishable from a conventional vehicle, but as it enters the water its wheels retract and a powerful water jet takes over propulsion. The amphibious 45-seater coach is able travel at 70mph on land and 10mph on water.

Duck boats (DUKW) are a military amphibious vehicle dating back to WWII that are used around the world for city and harbour tours, but the Amphicoach promises to be more luxurious than anything on the market.

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “The Amphicoach could be put to good use in congested cities – perhaps even as a means of moving competitors and officials during the 2012 London Olympics without the need to close roads.”
