Group calls for Welsh transport changes

A group of 20 Welsh organisations is calling for a change in the country’s transport policy.

Sustainable Transport Cymru is calling for a bold shift in policy to effectively tackle climate change.

Among the changes proposed by the body are an Oyster card-style system, car sharing initiatives, traffic claiming measures, new cycling and walking paths and a congestion charge.

Lee Waters, chair of the alliance, said that the group is fed up with previous green strategies in which half the budget is tied up in road schemes: “If we are serious about tackling climate change in Wales, we urgently need a bold shift in transport policy. Projects which cut car use should be given priority.”

The group has unveiled its proposals ahead of the government’s announcement of its plans for the Welsh transport system.

Sustainable Transport Cymru Transport blueprint

2 A range of ‘smarter choices’ measures – car clubs, car sharing, park and ride schemes

4 An extensive network of shared paths for walking and cycling (segregated from traffic)
5 Congestion charging allied with extra investment in public transport
6 Parking control, such as use of workplace parking levies
7 An extension of safe routes to schools, such as using traffic-calming measures near schools and creating walking and cycle routes to schools
8 Re-allocation of road space towards sustainable modes of transport
9 ‘Demand-responsive’ services, including community transport, to tackle social exclusion in rural areas and other areas of transport poverty
