Drivers in Leicestershire are putting lives in danger by failing to stop at traffic lights, according to the Leicester Mercury.
The newspaper carried out a study which involved sitting at three of the city centre’s junctions for an hour each, in which time it saw 78 vehicles pass through red lights.
A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa), told the publication the figures were “shocking”.
He said: “Other drivers, passengers, cyclists or pedestrians should not have to pay with their lives because of another driver’s impatience and selfishness.”
The spokesman also commented that traffic signals change to red “for a reason”, adding that those taking this kind of risk are “massively” increasing their chances of an accident.
During the three-hour study, the newspaper also noted 250 vehicles passing through lights after they had changed to amber.
