Skyride to tell people ‘get on your bike!’

A cycling event is being organised with the hope of getting more people to take up biking as a method of transport and exercise.

Skyride, which is organised by Sky and British Cycling, will lead to the closure of a number of roads in Manchester, Glasgow, Leicester and London as supporters take to the streets on their bikes. The campaign events will take place in the cities on August 2nd, 23rd and 30th and September 20th, respectively.

Elle Macpherson, supermodel, Gethin Jones, TV presenter, and Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton will be promoting the project, which aims to get Britain’s 7.4 million unused bikes out of the shed and onto the streets.

Ms Pendleton states: "It’s a great opportunity for people who have got a bike at home but haven’t really had the motivation to get out there and use it."

In other news, workers at Gateshead Council have continued to bike to work even through the winter months, suggesting that demand for cycle parking spaces has soared.
