Gateshead Council workers get on their bikes

Workers at Gateshead Council continued to use pedal power even through the colder months and even more are doing so as the summer begins, research has shown.

The local authority revealed that many people continued to cycle to work during the winter, with Nick Clennett, head of transport and highways for the body, saying he is “delighted” with this.

He added that demand for bicycle parking spaces has “soared” since the start of the summer.

To meet this level of interest, the council has installed new covered lockers in which riders can store their bikes.

Mr Clennett added that, even before this demand, the authority had been approached regarding implementing more space for people to leave their bicycles in a safe place.

In other cycling news, Britons are being urged to use pedal power during the next few days to mark National Bike Week, which runs until June 21st.

Do cyclists need insurance?

According to research only 2 per cent of cyclists have adequate insurance. You may be covered on your household insurance policy, but read the small print. Spend a little time doing research before you buy cycle insurance as some providers offer much more for your money. Cycle insurance from the ETA includes new-for-old replacement, third party insurance (in the case of an accident you may need to seek compensation or even deal with a claim by someone else), personal accident cover and if you breakdown, they will even come out and recover you and your bike.

What is the ETA?

The ETA provides motorists and cyclists with green breakdown cover and green insurance products and campaigns for sustainable transport – when you buy our services below you help fund our charitable work.
