Drivers ‘race sat navs’

Some drivers race to beat the estimated arrival times shown on their sat nav, a study by Autoglass has shown.

According to a poll, 40 per cent of the 3,000 motorists questioned admitted that they regularly do this.

Younger drivers are the worst for this bad habit, the research found, with 26 per cent of the under-25s saying that they almost always set themselves the challenge of arriving at their destination quicker than the sat nav has predicted.

Nigel Doggett, managing director for the firm behind the study, warned that this could pose a danger to those behind the wheel.

He said: “Exceeding the speed limit is a serious offence putting the driver and other motorists in extreme danger on our roads.”

The research also found that 17 per cent of 17 to 18-year-olds had picked up points on their licence after trying to out-do their sat nav.

In other news, earlier this week the Yorkshire Post reported that camera technology which would monitor a driver’s average speed could be tested in South Yorkshire.

The ETA offers cyclists and motorists with breakdown cover and green insurance products and campaigns for sustainable transport.
