Speeding computer set for trials

Speeding could soon be a thing of the past thanks to a new in-car computer.

The Intelligent Speed Adaptation system automatically keeps vehicles to the legal limit and is set to be trialled in London.

Cars travelling too quickly along roads will be automatically slowed down thanks to the technology, which involves the use of sat nav-style global positioning satellite equipment to determine where a motorist is and what the speed limit is.

Transport for London (TfL) is planning to install the technology in a London bus, a taxi and 20 cars. The organisation, which is responsible for all of London’s buses believes that if every London driver used the device, the capital would see a 10 per cent drop in road casualties.
h3. The safety benefits of speed limiters

Up to 29 per cent of injuries on British roads could be prevented through the voluntary use of automatic speed limiters in cars, according to the Commission for Integrated Transport (CfIT).

Critics say the device risks reducing driver responsibility.

The ETA is a founder member of the Slower Speeds Initiative and has long held that all vehicles should have variable speed limiters fitted as standard by law.
