Ford to give eco car 1,000-mile test

Ford has unveiled plans to test one of its latest cars by driving for 43 hours without a visit to the petrol pumps.

A team of engineers aims to help rally driver, Carl Edwards squeeze 1,000 miles from a single tank of fuel.

The family car-sized Ford Fusion hybrid will need to average 57 mpg if it is to achieve this goal – according to industry ratings, the car is capable of only 41 mpg.

Ford claims that during preliminary tests its drivers were able to get 70 mpg through the use of eco-driving techniques.
