Respect for Postees

Talking about gated communities in my last blog it reminded me of the problem facing the Royal Mail – not only in getting into gated communities but delivering to remote locations through difficult and sometimes non-existent letter boxes.

When Roland Hill introduced the world’s first universal postal service in 1837 it was revolutionary.

Gated Up

The tragic deaths of those girls who, in two separate incidents, were trapped by electric gates caused an outcry about the regulation of the industry. Naturally this should be addressed.

Our land border

A group of friends were having a natter the other day when I heard someone say “we don’t have that problem because our country doesn’t have a land boundary”.
My ears pricked up “But we do”.

All headteachers should cycle to school

The recent news that the Schonrocks of Dulwich were allowing their children to cycle to school by themselves seemed to be early silly-season news. Of course children ought to be able to cycle to school if they wish. Hearing that the headteacher told the parents that if they did not supervise their children to school then he would have to report them to the social services made it more newsworthy. The question in my mind is: did the head really believe the children were in sufficient danger for the parents to be considered negligent or was he just protecting himself?

How to make potholes a thing of the past

The surface quality of our roads is deplorable – potholes almost everywhere. It effects everyone especially cyclists and bikers. But bus users and walkers are affected too. This is not a problem just for motorists although the cost to them is rising fast and the situation generally is getting worse (as measured by the highway condition index).
