It’s all in the details: Understated Dutch cycling design

May 6, 2025

Cyclists who use a ramp specially designed to climb the stairs with their bikes

When we picture Dutch cycling infrastructure, it’s often the grand gestures that come to mind: Vast bike parking garages that swallow thousands of bicycles, sweeping bridges that arc gracefully over water, and billiard table-smooth segregated lanes thronged with riders. But beyond the flagship projects lies something more quietly revolutionary.

These small details are the mundane, everyday features that Dutch cyclists perhaps barely notice - but that we UK cyclists dream of. Together, they form a powerful signal: You belong here.

Angled rubbish bins

Along many Dutch cycle paths, public bins are tilted just so, making it easier for riders to toss in a wrapper or cup without dismounting. Clean streets and uninterrupted journeys? Win-win.

Wheel ramps on stairs

Encounter a staircase in the Netherlands and odds are there’ll be a narrow groove running alongside - just wide enough for you to wheel your bike up.

Traffic lights with bikes in mind

It’s not just that Dutch cyclists get their own traffic lights - they often get the green light a little earlier than cars.

Hold rails at junctions

Even the red light is made more bearable. At busy crossings, you might find a pole or footrest to lean on while waiting. A small design flourish, but it says: We’ve thought about your comfort.

Trains and bikes

With bike parking at stations, affordable rental bikes(OV-fiets), and relaxed rules about bringing bikes aboard trains, multi-modal journeys are made easy. This is planning that recognises bikes as both independent and complementary.

Wayfinding

Clear signage, distance markers, and journey time estimates make planning a ride intuitive.

What ties all these design touches together is intent. None of them exist in isolation, and none are treated as extravagant extras. They are embedded, expected, and maintained — not as a favour to cyclists, but because the infrastructure has been built with them in mind from the outset.

In the UK, we cyclists are often made to feel like temporary guests in a transport system built around cars. In the Netherlands, cyclists are permanent residents — and it shows. Every gentle ramp, every waiting rail, every well-lit path is a quiet vote of confidence in two wheels.

Because in the end, it’s all in the details.
