Is this the best value e-cargo bike on the market today?

The family-friendly Tern GSD is the cargo bike on everyone’s lips – not least because it’s enabling some to cut household running costs by ditching their car, but at over £5,000, it remains too much of a financial stretch for many.

Snapping at the heels of the GSD this autumn is Decathlon’s new e-cargo bike. Boasting many of the same features as the Tern, including a passenger bench for kids that includes robust hand rails and running boards, the R500 longtail e-cargo bike is priced at £2,800.

Cargo bikes offer a clean, quiet and cost effective way to carry stuff that’s too bulky for a conventional bicycle. However, the fact they’re bigger and heavier can make a breakdown troublesome. Even the shortest journey comes to an abrupt halt in the event of a flat tyre, broken chain or buckled wheel and carrying kids or cargo adds an unwelcome dimension to being stuck.

You suggest buying in Europe and bringing home – that’d be by ferry or Eurostar. But trains (I don’t know about ferries, probably similar) are averse to carrying ebikes, probably to do with the Lithium batteries’ fire risk.
