The joy of less: the rise of the single-speed bicycle
July 16, 2025

At a time when some bikes are becoming as complex as the devices we’re meant to be escaping, singlespeed riding offers a compelling alternative: a kind of cycling mindfulness that geared bikes can’t replicate.
In a world of ever-more complicated technology - 12-speed wireless drivetrains, app-controlled suspension, bikes that beep when you shift - global cycling figures suggest a growing number of riders are opting for single-speed and fixed-gear bikes. The global market for these basic bikes is forecast to grow at a rate of 7.5% over the coming years.

Once the preserve of old-school track racers, couriers, and purists, single-speed and fixed-gear bikes have renewed appeal. Amid the complexity of modern cycling, there's something beautifully liberating about a simple bike that just goes.
Without gears, there’s no faffing with shifters, no second-guessing whether you’re in the right ratio. You just pedal. And in that simplicity, something unexpected happens - your brain tunes into the ride. The rhythm of your legs. The world around you.
Of course, single speed bikes make little sense for rides that involve long climbs, or carrying heavy loads. But if you’re cycling for fun, or to clear your head, this pure form of cycling can be just the thing.
And then there’s the weight. Strip off the shifters, cables, extra sprockets, and derailleurs, and what’s left is a bike that’s not only lighter, but tougher. There’s less to bend, bash, or break.
Fixed vs Freewheel
Not all one-speed bikes are created equal.
A singlespeed bike has a single gear, but allows you to coast. A fixed gear or “fixie” doesn’t. The pedals are always in motion when the bike is moving, just like on a child’s tricycle.
Fixed-gear fans talk about a deep sense of connection to the bike and the road - the feeling of pedalling through every moment. You feel the bike’s speed, grip and balance more acutely. It becomes second nature to modulate speed with your legs.
That said, fixies aren’t for every terrain. It’s why many one-speed bikes use a flip-flop hub - a clever little design with a fixed cog on one side and a freewheel on the other. Flip the rear wheel around and your bike switches between fixed and freewheel, depending on your mood or route.
