Better still, the equality offered by cycling goes beyond the socioeconomic.
Research by Wheels for Wellbeing reveals that 75 per cent of disabled cyclists find riding easier than walking with the same proportion using their cycle as a mobility aid, just like a wheelchair or mobility scooter.
Cycling is a great form of active travel of those with special needs; It reduces strain on joints, aids balance and can alleviate breathing difficulties. However, unlike wheelchairs and mobility scooters, cycles of any kind are not recognised in law as mobility aids.
Wheels for Wellbeing is lobbying for cycles to be recognised as a mobility aid when used by a disabled person. This change would put them on a level playing field with wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
