£300m boost for active travel - and we're still playing catch-up

The government’s latest £300 million investment in walking, wheeling, and cycling might sound like progress, but when you look at the bigger picture, it’s clear we’re still stuck in the slow lane. In 2021/22, the UK spent £36.9 billion on transport. The lion’s share – £21.9 billion (59%) – went on rail, followed by £4.9 billion (13%) on local roads and £4.3 billion (12%) on national roads.
