Mobility Scooters: 10 questions everyone asks (and the answers that matter)
June 12, 2025

Mobility scooters are liberating. Just ask the millions who rely on them to get about. But judging by what people ask us about them, there’s still a lot of uncertainty around the dos and don’ts of scootering.
Whether you’re looking for a pavement model to nip to the shops or an all-terrain beast to venture off road, here are the most commonly asked mobility scooter questions, and the answers we give.
1. Do I need a driving licence to use a mobility scooter?
No. You do not need a driving licence to use a mobility scooter -regardless of age or ability. What matters is why you use one. UK law states that mobility scooters are for those with a mobility issue, either long-term or temporary.
There are two categories of scooter:
- Class 2 scooters (up to 4 mph) for pavements
- Class 3 scooters (up to 8 mph) which can go on the road but must be registered with the DVLA
Still unsure? If it can do more than 4 mph or it has lights and indicators, you probably need to register it.

2. How much does a mobility scooter cost?
You can spend as little as £700 for a basic pavement scooter to well over over £3,000 for something chunkier with off-road suspension and heated handlebars.
Don’t just look at price tags. Think about where you’ll store it, whether it needs to fold, and what its range is. Then make sure you're protected. ETA mobility scooter insurance, for example, starts at £65 a year and covers theft, accidental damage, and 24/7 breakdown recovery - ideal when your scooter is a lifeline, not just a luxury.
3. What’s the fastest mobility scooter I can buy?
Legally, the limit on UK roads is 8 mph for a Class 3 scooter. Pavement scooters are capped at 4 mph. You’ll find all sorts online boasting 12 or even 15 mph - but use them on public roads and you risk invalidating your insurance and will fall foul of the law.
4. How far can a mobility scooter go on a single charge?
Most scooters offer a range between 10 and 25 miles. That can change depending on hills, your weight, the weather, and even tyre pressure.
ETA insurance includes 24/7 breakdown recovery so if something goes wrong, or your battery conks out mid-trip, help is only a phone call away whatever the time of day or night.
5. How long do the batteries last?
Expect 1–3 years from a good battery. That’s around 500 full charge cycles. To maximise life, store the battery somewhere dry, charge it regularly (even if you’re not riding), and avoid runnning the battery completely flat.
A dead battery mid-journey is more than a nuisance. That’s where our breakdown recovery service shines: flat battery, broken tiller, punctured tyre? You’re covered.

6. Can I ride a mobility scooter on the road?
Class scooters are allowed on the road if there is no footpath or pavement Yes, if it’s a Class 3 model with working headlights, indicators, mirrors and a horn. You also need to be at least 14 years old.
But just because you can use the road doesn’t mean you should in every circumstance. Always consider whether there's a pavement alternative or a safer route.
7. Can I take my mobility scooter on a plane or train?
Short answer: it depends.
Most airlines allow folding mobility scooters, but you’ll usually need to notify them well in advance. Train companies are more accommodating, but again, check bvefore you travel.
If you’re travelling with your scooter, look for insurance that includes accidental damage, theft away from home.
8. Are mobility scooters waterproof?
Not exactly. Scooters can handle drizzle, but downpours or heavy spray can damage electrics. Use a weather canopy or waterproof poncho for yourself, and a cover when storing your scooter outside.
9. Do mobility scooters need regular maintenance?
Yes. Just like a car or bike, your scooter needs attention. Regular checks on brakes, tyres, battery and lights are essential - and an annual service is a good idea.
10. What accessories are worth getting?
Here’s what people are searching for:
- Canopies for rain protection
- Walking stick holders
- Extra mirrors
- Phone mounts and USB chargers
- Seat cushions for longer journeys
- Rear-view cameras (yes, really)
