If you've bought a mobility scooter without paperwork, how can you tell what type it is?

There are two categories of mobility scooter.

Class 2 mobility scooters can’t be used on the road (except where there isn’t a pavement) and have a maximum speed of 4 mph. This type of mobility scooter does not need to be registered.

Class 3 mobility scooters can be used on the road, and have a maximum speed of 4 mph off the road, and 8 mph on the road. This type of scooter should be registered with the DVLA although you don't need to for a registration plate.

If your scooter has a dial that allows you to adjust its top speed it's a type 3.

A mobility scooter is considered “not in class” if it cantravel faster than 8mph, is wider than 85cm, or weighs more than 150kg (200kgif you need equipment attached to it – for example, medical equipment). Ifyours is not in class, it must be used on the road only, you’ll need toregister it with DVLA and hold a valid driving licence. Insurance isn’trequired for class 2 or class 3 scooters, but if your not-in-class scooter’s unladenweight exceeds 254kg (excluding any attached equipment), insurance iscompulsory.
