The 100ft trimaran that uses bicycle power
June 30, 2010
Successful single-handed sailing demands that a skipper be physically fit and highly resourceful, so perhaps it should come as little surprise that the record-breaking sailor and keen cyclist, Frank Cammas, has fitted a bicycle to the deck of a 100ft trimaran, so that he can trim the sails using pedal power.
Groupama 3 is designed to be sailed by a crew of 10, but has recently been adapted to be sailed single-handed. The addition of a bicycle fixed to the deck means that when Frank Cammas’s arms tire after using the winches he can climb aboard the bike and trim with his legs.
Around the world in 48 days
Groupama 3 was the transatlantic record holder between 2007 and 2009 and earlier this year, the French trimaran became the fastest boat to sail around the world with a time of 48 days, 7 hours 44 minutes and 52 seconds.
