Bicycle pedals and the internet of everything
January 8, 2015

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week is dominated by tech you didn’t realise you needed - most of it part of the so-called ‘internet of everything’. If the exhibitors are to be believed, seemingly every household item will be soon be connected – from plant pots to bicycle pedals.

The Connected Cycle smart pedal automatically records the speed, route, incline, and calories burned during every bike ride. The stats are sent to the cloud, and accessible via a smartphone app.

The pedal generates its own power and uses its own internet connection so works independently from your smartphone. More information at connectedcycle.com
Theft-proof cycle computer

Most thieves will struggle to recognise the Connected Cycle smart pedal as a cycle computer and it can only be removed using a special coded key.
Theft of bicycle parts and accessories is on the increase. Saddles, wheels and even complete handlebar set-ups are now frequently stolen from bikes left in public. Thieves increasingly steal bicycle parts because they do not have to remove the bike lock and items such as shifters can be worth hundreds of pounds.
Cycle insurance from the ETA covers bicycle parts such as saddles and quick release wheels as standard, and with no requirement to lock these items separately and a low excess of 5 per cent (£25 minimum), you enjoy peace of mind whenever you lock your bike up in public.
