Anti-crime campaign addresses bike theft
December 8, 2009
Bike theft is a major concern of police in Scarborough this Christmas.
Responding to growing fears over people’s security over the festive season, an annual crime prevention campaign has been launched in the town centre.
Sgt Diane Jobling said:“Many children will be getting a new bicycle for Christmas, so we will be selling ‘immobitags’ at the drastically reduced rate of £5 so their bike can be safeguarded immediately.”
What is an immobitag?
An Immobitag is an electronic device hidden within the frame of a bicycle, the signal from which corresponds with an online record of the bike’s owner.
A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “In the unusual case that a stolen bicycle is recovered, an electronic tag can help it be reunited with its owner, but a stout lock and a good insurance policy are wiser investments.”
Bicycles are vulnerable to theft and in the case of an accident you may need to seek compensation or even deal with a claim by someone else. Cycle insurance from the ETA includes new-for-old replacement, third party insurance, personal accident cover and if you breakdown, they will even come out and recover you and your bike.
