Spurcycle: A Rolls Royce of bicycle bells

spurcycle bicycle bell

Spurcycle makes precision engineered bicycle bells. Cheap they are not, but the nickel alloy bell creates a powerful, enduring sound. And they look great. We think of them as bicycle bling; a beautiful adornment for any set of handlebars.

Spurcycle bicycle bells

Fabricated from stainless steel and brass components, Spurcycle claims it’s the only bell you will ever need.

Win a Spurcycle bicycle bell

The Spurcycle produces a ‘powerful sound from a trim, precision form. A bell for any bike: Modern road, mountain, or vintage townie.’ We have one to give away. Ping us a comment at the bottom of this page and we’ll pick one lucky winner next week.

Spurcycle bicycle bells

The bicycle bell is a much under-valued accessory; although it is a legal requirement that bicycle start their lives with one fitted, the fashion is for them to be quickly removed. If you cycle on tracks and paths shared with others, they are a polite way of announcing your approach, especially if followed with a verbal greeting and request to pass.

Beyond bicycle bells

Frustrated and angered by the disproportionate danger posed to cyclists by lorries, here at the ETA we built the world’s loudest bicycle horn. Better still, we have a Guinness World Record to prove it. At close quarters ‘The Hornster‘ belts out 138 decibels.

The ethical choice

The ETA was established in 1990 as an ethical provider of green, reliable travel services. Over 30 years on, we continue to offer cycle insurance , breakdown cover and mobility scooter insurance while putting concern for the environment at the heart of all we do.

The Good Shopping Guide judges us to be the UK’s most ethical provider.

I’ve always favoured the approach of vocally politely alerting pedestrians to my presence, but after some feedback, they seem to think a bell would be preferable.

I’d love to give that theory a go with this beauty please.

I generally have to use my bell around twice a week, only yesterday I approached from behind, two people pushing wheelchairs side-by-side taking up the whole width of the road (with a parked cars opposite), had to use my bell to make them aware of my presence and slow down a lot while I waited for one of them to give me some room to pass (which they did begrudgingly!).
Would be great to have a louder bell to warn people sooner, as I’m never sure if mine is heard from afar.

A bicycle bell’s pure note, not only alerts others of one’s approach, but it also informs those that hear it, the mode of transport. Bicycles bells are civilised, like bicycles.

“Is a bell necessary on a bicycle”?

I think so. A sharp ping at 20m warns most pedestrians and dog owners that a bike is coming. If they fail to allow space then a polite word may also be necessary. Kids love pinging back too.
