GPS cannon for police cars…and bicycles?

Criminals trying to evade police face a new piece of high-tech law enforcement technology that is almost impossible to escape from – patrol cars in America can now fire self-adhesive GPS ‘tags’ at a vehicle they want to stop.

The StarChase barrels nestle discreetly in the front grille

The StarChase system is designed to reduce the danger posed to the public by high-speed police chases.

A compressed-air, twin-barrelled cannon, mounted behind the grille of a police car, uses a laser to target the fleeing vehicle. It fires a GPS tag at the fleeing vehicle, which, once attached, transmits its coordinates back to the police control room. The police car can then reduce its speed and follow at a discreet distance.

Friction between cyclists and motorists has existed since cars first took to the roads. A growing number of riders now attach cameras to their bikes and helmets to record evidence in the case of a collision or road rage incident. It is tempting to imagine a scaled-down version of the StarChase police car system that could be fired from a bicycle…

We at the ETA had a go at building our own bicycle fitted with deterrents against aggressive drivers. The BOND bike is equipped with a flame-thrower in the handlebars to prevent overtaking motorists getting too close. An ejector seat disposes of thieves who beat the padlock and chain.

Maybe add an explosive and remote detonator just in case they still don’t stop?
