Youngsters urged to cycle to school
November 10, 2009
Schoolchildren are being urged to get on their bikes in York.
As part of the council’s ‘Bike It’ scheme, an array of assemblies, classroom sessions and activities are to be held in 12 schools across the region to promote the benefits of cycling.
The initiative is being led by newly appointed Bike It officer Jim Cole.
"I’m delighted to be working in York and, although I will initially focus my efforts on 12 schools in particular, I am interested to hear from other schools interested in getting involved in the future," he said.
"The programme of work that I devise is unique to each school and some will complete the scheme quicker than others. It would be great to have other schools ready to get involved when the first wave [is] complete."
Mr Cole added that he is planning to run a series of intra and inter-school events to further boost two-wheels in the region, including morning bike rides to school from designated meeting points.
Parents of children taking part in the scheme may want to consider taking out bike insurance for extra security.
