Solar power isn't just a great hope for world governments hoping to cut carbon emissions; the technology also promises convenience and savings to the individual. Whilst solar powered calculators have been with us since the 1970s, the sun will be able to charge many more of our personal gadgets in future as solar PV cell technology becomes more and more efficient. We look at a few of the most interesting ideas below.
1. Solar-powered sun lounger
This solar powered sun lounger features built-in water misters and lets you keep your poolside gadgets charged without having to move a muscle.
2. Solar-powered lawnmower
The robotic solar-powered hybrid lawn mower from Husqvarna has an integrated solar panel, which extends battery life and reduces energy consumption.
3. Solar powered barbecue
The COOKUP 200 from ID Cook lets you you barbecue on the move, without the need for fossil fuels.
4. Solar powered beer
The Cerddin Brewery in Bridgend, Wales uses 18 photovoltaic roof panels to produce the energy needed to produce their range of ales and ciders.
5. Solar powered refrigerator

6. Solar-powered bikini
This eye-catching bikini from New York designer Andrew Schneider is covered in small, flexible photovoltaic cells which capture the sunlight and can charge your gadgets while you relax.
Using second hand parts at a total cost of just £30, this solar-powered electric bicycle is capable of speeds up to 11mph.
