The cycling shoes with a built-in fridge
December 15, 2011
If you buy a pair of cycling shoes that costs the same as an entry-level mountain bike you are entitled to expect something out of the ordinary; a new design by sports brand Louis Garneau promises to refrigerate sweaty feet.
The Carbon Pro Team shoe has alcohol-based sugar xylitol in its insole that serves to moderate moisture and temperature – fibres in the fabric react to sweat, effectively converting it into a refrigerant.
The Carbon Pro Team Shoes will be available from January 2012 for around £250.
Cool clothing
Clothing that can regulate temperature to protect its wearer from extreme conditions has long been used by astronauts and deep sea divers, but thanks to a new product called Climaware, cyclists could soon have access to climate-controlled vests, shoes and even helmets.
Climaware clothing places small metal discs close to the skin and then passes a small electrical charge through them to alter their temperature to between 17 degrees and 35 degrees Celsius for up to three hours on a single battery charge.
Climaware is designed to be integrated with existing helmet designs or sold as a heating/cooling cap or headband.
The device weighs around 80 grams and uses a rechargeable battery.
Cycle insurance from the ETA includes, amongst other things, new-for-old, third party cover, personal accident cover, race event cover and if you suffer a mechanical breakdown, they will come out and recover you and your bike.
