Drivers 'discriminated against due to age'
April 28, 2009
Drivers are being discriminated against because of their age, research from a price comparison website suggests.
An average 17-year-old living in Lancaster is currently quoted £3,015 for a motor insurance policy, half as much again as someone just one year older.
Moneysupermarket’s Steve Sweeney says that firms will continue to take this route, as the Equality Bill fails to prohibit it, and the behaviour of some young drivers also adds to the problem.
A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “Insurance companies are in the business of assessing risk so the youngest drivers pay more because they are most likely to be involved in crashes.”
What is the ETA?
The ETA is provides motorists and cyclists with carbon-neutral breakdown cover and insurance products. As well as encouraging responsible driving to reduce carbon, the ETA campaigns for sustainable transport.
