Bicycle inspired collapsible wheel
March 29, 2013
Not content with helping originate pneumatic tyres, ball bearings, asphalt roads, lightweight steel tubing and powered flight, cycling has brought the world the collapsible wheel.
The folding wheel was originally conceived as a folding bicycle wheel by Duncan Fitzsimmons when he was a graduate student at the Royal College of Arts. Following much public attention and calls from the wheelchair community telling him that the concept would be invaluable to wheelchair users, he redesigned it as a wheelchair wheel.
Developed for active wheelchair users, Morp Wheels are the first ever foldable wheelchair wheels. After being disconnected from the wheelchair frame, the wheels can be collapsed to a compact form for easy transport and storage. The design allows wheelchairs to be stowed in smaller vehicles and even an aircraft’s overhead storage locker.
