A bicycle that’s half ice yacht, half microlight

It looks like an ice yacht without its sail or a microlight aircraft that’s lost its wing, but the Ice Bat is a new type of human-powered sport; a propeller-driven trike that powers across ice at speeds of 20mph.

The concept is as unusual as it is environmentally friendly. Think of it as a cycle you can use on frozen roads, lakes and even the local ice rink.

The idea is no flight of fancy; the Ice Bat concept has been refined over the last few years after keen cyclist Steve Ellis wanted a way to use his bike on frozen canals, but without damaging the ice so that it could also be used on ice rinks.

Ice Bat racing

Earlier this year, 49 people in the Netherlands took part in the first ever Ice Bat World Championships

Writing in the current edition of the wonderfully eclectic cycling magazine Velovision, Steve Ellis explains that he is regularly asked why he rides an Ice Bat. “Because I can” he answers coolly.
