Electric Ford Focus coming soon

January 21, 2011

The Ford Focus, a vehicle that was Britain’s best-selling new car for 10 successive years, will soon be available to buy as a fully electric version.

The Focus BEV has already been tested on British roads and whilst it is not currently listed as eligible for the government’s £5,000 electric car grant, there is little doubt that it will meet the criteria when it reaches forecourts in 2012.

Ford claims the electric Focus will have a Nissan Leaf-beating re-charge time of 3-4 hours with a 240V supply, and a top speed of 84mph.

There is no word on the car’s maximum range, but in order to compete with electric cars that will already be on the market, expect the Focus BEV to be capable of 80 miles.

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “The advantage the BEV will have is that with over 9 million examples of the Ford Focus sold in Europe alone, the electric version is already a familiar and trusted brand.”
