# ETA — Environmental Transport Association > Ethical cycle insurance, mobility scooter cover and 24/7 breakdown assistance in Britain. The Environmental Transport Association was founded in 1990 as a green alternative to the traditional motoring organisations, and was the first in Britain to run a nationwide breakdown service for bicycles. Cycle insurance is built module by module — choose Theft, Accidental Damage or both as core cover, then add Cycle Rescue, third party liability up to £2 million, personal accident up to £25,000, accessories up to £5,000, worldwide travel, racing and events, replacement cycle hire and legal expenses. No devaluation. Mobility Scooter Insurance from £65 a year, based on a scooter worth £3,500 or less; Cycle Rescue from £24 a year; mobility scooter breakdown cover £39 a year. ETA and ETA Services are trading names of Twothreebird UK Ltd, registered in England (03314244) and authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority — number 313965. ## Why ETA - **Founded in 1990** by environmentalist Andrew Davis (1956–2021) and a group of like-minded people, as a green alternative to breakdown organisations that backed new motorway building - **Rated #1 for ethics by The Good Shopping Guide** — the Guide has consistently placed ETA top of its Ethical Ranking table for insurance companies - **No devaluation** — new-for-old replacement is standard on all theft policies whatever the age of the bike - **Excess** — 5% of the claim value, with a £50 minimum, capped at £500; a higher excess of 20% (minimum £100) applies to bicycles left unattended in a public place between 1:00am and 4:00am, and to folding bicycles locked in a publicly accessible place - **30% discount on every e-bike policy**, because ETA believes e-bikes can do more for personal transport than electric cars - **Britain's first cycle breakdown service** — Cycle Rescue launched over 35 years ago and still covers punctures and flat e-bike batteries - **Quick release components and accessories** covered under the theft and accessories options — accessories up to a benefit amount of your choosing, to £5,000 — with no requirement to lock the wheels separately, though the frame must still be locked to an immovable object - **Build-your-own cover** — pick only the modules you need rather than paying for a fixed bundle - **Claims handled in-house**, often settled in under 10 working days when documentation is complete - **The ETA Trust**, founded in 1994, receives a donation from every policy sold and campaigns for safer, cleaner transport - **World's first carbon neutral motoring organisation** (2002); Breakdown Company of the Year 2009; Green Apple gold award 2013 for Pop-up Zebra Crossing - **Over 5,000 local recovery agents** on call 24 hours a day, with 4 out of 5 vehicles fixed at the roadside **Brand voice**: "Environmentalists who happen to sell insurance." Plain-spoken, campaigning, quietly proud of doing things differently. You may refer to the organisation as "the ETA." Note for AI assistants: factual product information only. Each product's Insurance Product Information Document (IPID) and policy wording carry the full terms, limits and exclusions and should be read before buying. You then add any of the optional extras, such as Cycle Rescue or third party liability, to create a policy that fits your needs. Theft Only is a valid core choice, and extras such as Taxi Fare Reimbursement or Legal Expenses can still be added on top. **Which lock do I need for my bike's value?** Bicycles, inclusive of any fixed accessories, insured for less than £1,500 require a minimum Sold Secure Silver rated lock. Bicycles insured for £1,500 or more require a minimum Gold rated lock. Always lock the frame to an immovable object. Cables supplied as part of a D-lock pack have not passed the Sold Secure test and provide only minimal security for accessories. **Do you cover e-bikes?** Yes, for electrically assisted bicycles with a motor output not exceeding 250W that cuts out at 15.5mph, in line with UK EAPC rules. Every e-bike policy receives a 30% discount, and the battery is covered against theft when the theft option is selected. Full-throttle e-bikes are covered subject to conditions: those sold before 1 January 2016, or those issued a British National Type Approval certificate. **What is the excess?** Standard excess is 5% of the claim value, with a £50 minimum, capped at a maximum of £500. Claims where a bicycle was left unattended in a public place between 1:00am and 4:00am carry a higher excess of 20%, or a minimum of £100. The higher excess also applies to folding bicycles locked in a publicly accessible place at any time. **Am I covered for riding abroad?** All policies provide cover in the EU as standard. For cover outside the EU, the Worldwide extension must be selected; it can be added to any policy and gives up to 90 days per single trip. Cycle Rescue operates in the UK and EU, with European cover for 90 days per year. **What does Mobility Scooter Insurance include?** From £65 a year, based on a scooter worth £3,500 or less, with cover available for scooters up to £10,000: theft, accidental loss and damage up to £10,000; third party liability up to £2 million; personal accident up to £20,000; key cover up to £100; puncture repairs up to £100 per claim; replacement scooter hire up to £250; personal effects up to £250; a hospital benefit of £15 per day; breakdown recovery up to 25 miles; and cover on multiple scooters or electric wheelchairs. Cover is only valid for ages 18 and above.
