Bicycles don’t need indicators or brake lights (although on London’s super-busy cycle superhighways, the latter might be useful for cyclists to signal between themselves) but neither of these features are the best thing about the Magnic Microlight.
They claim to be the world’s first contactless rim dynamos that work (non-magnetic) aluminium wheels and deliver bright light without any batteries, wheel-contact, cables or (noticeable) resistance.
The team behind the Magnic Microlights see the device as a component that could become a standard feature of bikes. Their crowdfunding target is highly ambitious, but they plan to launch even if the target is not met.

Always wondered why we stopped using dynamo technology on bikes….yes the lights did stop and start when peddling but surely there is opportunity to use this energy to charge up a back up battery…so much potential. Good luck with the crowd funding for this, it deserves support

Dynamos are still around and now stay on once you stop (stand light). Still a niche market in UK but big on the continent. This is like other things a reflection of cycling being a sport or activity here and transport there.

A few years ago, this may have been a good idea, but disc brakes are becoming the norm, so anything designed around rim brakes will be extinct before they get off the ground.

The second Magnic Microlight kickstarter.com campaign with improved brightness and miniaturisation got funded some days ago and will end on 2018-12-21 – one can still join.
Just like the to date Magnic Light iC they are a very clever way to have continuous bright light without friction by tyre or hub dynamo, without any cabeling or batteries, now far less protruding and at a total of just 140g in the full double setup.
Two models are available:
Magnic Microlights (to be mounted in break pads, with pads still replaceable the usual way) or Magnic Microlights Wega (to be mounted on the frame and fork when no rim breaks are present or of an odd design).

Presently they miss the smart options like Bluetooth support and brake lever induced turn blinking that is a stretch goal of an ambitious attempt for 7 times the goal but that still might come in the future.
