Man buys back his stolen bicycle

A man has bought his own stolen bicycle back from a thief rather than face an exorbitant excess on his insurance policy.

Mark Robinson told the Cambridge News “My insurance premium excess would have been more than this so the simple maths said it would be cheaper than getting a replacement by whatever means, and furthermore by recovering the bike, provide the police with incontrovertible evidence that the ‘seller’ if not guilty of the theft itself was certainly guilty of receiving and handling stolen goods.”

When Robinson reported the theft to police on April 13 he was told by officers to look for it on auction websites and Facebook.
Within a week the £800 bike turned up on Gumtree priced at £400.

Robinson responded to the ad and paid a cash ‘deposit’ of £200 to test-ride his own bike. This he did, and rode it straight to his car before driving home.

The ethical choice

The ETA was established in 1990 as an ethical provider of green, reliable travel services. Over 30 years on, we continue to offer cycle insurance , breakdown cover and mobility scooter insurance while putting concern for the environment at the heart of all we do.

The Good Shopping Guide judges us to be the UK’s most ethical provider.

ETA cycle insurance is good but I would much prefer to have a policy from them covering what I WANT and not what ETA thinks I should have!! Like for instance….cover for travel in Europe and world wide…don’t need it…liability riding a bike I don’t own, I only trust what I own…cover for racing/triathlons…I don’t do it…cover for other people using my bike…nobody else rides my bike! …cover for air travel…wont use it…If ETA removed all of this chaff my premium would nose dive!
