Volvo Life Paint for cyclists

Volvo Life Paint for cyclists is highly reflective coating that can be applied to any surface.

Volvo life paint

Car maker Volvo this week distributed 2,000 cans among London bike shops to gauge reaction from cyclists. They were gone within days.

According to Volvo: LifePaint is a unique reflective safety spray. Invisible by daylight, it glows brightly in the glare of car headlights. Making the invisible, visible. LifePaint washes off, and will not affect the colour or surface of your chosen material, lasting for approximately one week after application. Though designed for cycling, LifePaint can be used in all sorts of ways. Applied to clothes, shoes, and helmets, pushchairs and children’s backpacks – even dog leads and collars.

Cyclists are not ‘invisible’

Volvo has an admirable reputation for safety in car design. The company pioneered the three-point seat belt and it’s vision is that ‘no one is killed or injured in a Volvo in the year 2020. But there’s the rub. The threat from cars today is to those unprotected by seat belts, crumple zone and air bags. Innovation such as LifePaint is welcome, but cyclists and pedestrians are not invisible as described by Volvo. Even at night. Drivers have a responsibility to look out for vulnerable road users – whether or not they are glow-in-the-dark or festooned in lights.

The simple rule that should see road users who kill held to account can be lost amid safety messages aimed at vulnerable road users. For most of the first half of the twentieth century, campaigners lobbied against mandatory rear lights for bicycles. To make an argument against a safety measure is bound to be viewed as controversial, foolish even, and it is hard to imagine why a groups concerned solely with the welfare of cyclists made it for decades in the face of almost certain defeat. The intention of the law was to improve safety, but the concern was that it would result not in a road network on which cyclists were more visible because they had lights, but one on which cyclists without lights were regarded as invisible. The argument made by campaigners was subtle and counter intuitive, but that a century later resonates in pressure to make cycle helmets mandatory and even the promotion of high-visibility and reflective clothing.

I strongly believe that the majority of collisions happen because drivers are being inattentive or are driving too fast for the conditions. Painting myself will not make a driver slow down or be more attentive. Volvo had better come up with other ways of slowing vehicles down and preventing drivers from talking on their phones, drink driving, drug driving & etc etc. http://tinyurl.com/TragedyKT

I think this paint is a must have for all bicyclists! I live in Portland, Or and there is a large number of people who ride bikes all day everyday for there normal transportation needs this town is very bicycle friendly! About 8&1/2 months ago I was traveling home on a very busy main street in Portland during rush hour traffic I was hit buy a man driving a full sized SUV! He hit me so hard that I flew 15ft off my bike and landed on the sidewalk in a bus stop! Dislocated my shoulder broke a couple of fingers and had two very large hematopoietic pools one on my elbow and one on my head! If he would have been driving slower when he hit me then he would have ran me over completely! I haven’t felt comfortable enough since then to ride my bike after dark for fear of someone killing me! I would buy and use this paint to cover my bike and some of my riding gear when it goes on the market I need like 4 cans to paint everything!!

I would DEFINITELY spray my whole bicycle like in the video, and use it in addition to my red flashing LED tail lights and my 1000 lumen CREE LED headlamps. I live in the US, and the drivers here feel they own the road and don’t pay attention while they drive either.

I was actually rear-ended by a taxi last year who was partially on the sidewalk with his left fender wedged under my steel saddle-baskets – I suspect he was completing his logbook while driving and didn’t see my flashing LEDs until the very last minute. Fortunately, when his right tires went onto the sidewalk, his fender went UNDER my baskets, so I wasn’t injured (he took off and left the scene; wonder what story he told the cab company for the messed up left fender…).

In the winter, I could also spray images on the back of my jacket that they would be SURE to see. Too bad I can’t paint the bike to make it look like a huge truck :p .

I am involved in a ride for cancer called the 2015 Ride to Conquer Cancer which host around 2000 cyclists who ride a 250k ride over two days from Vancouver British Columbia Canada to Seattle Washington and back. Much of this ride will be along major freeways with lots of exposure to motor traffic speeding by so to have this paint sprayed on the bike adds tot eh safety of the ride at night, i would spay the bike, helmet and vest to be so visible. I would use it on all our family’s bikes, especially my husband and grandsons bikes. They are braver and more likely to get stuck riding in the dark. I especially like the idea of spraying helmets as that is the most logical line of sight for drivers to see. Please hurry up and sell it in the unites States (particularly in Pennsylvania.) I received acknowledge of Life Paint through our community program Reflect for Ryan, “Ryan Wallace-Tarry died on January 20, 2014 while long boarding home, (The program focuses on) the education of road safety and awareness.” I believe this product would be used and promoted. Our community would use your product on our dark country roads and in the cities, to paint our bikes, boards, dog leashes, umbrellas, walking sticks, shoes, and we also have many runners whom reflective arm bands, however these fall off with physical movement.
I also Kayak on the pacific ocean and would take a can on paint with in the chance I end up on the water later then expected in order for other boats to see me. I could then paint my hat, lifejacket, etc.

This looks AMAZING! I ride my bicycle a lot….but usually during the day. I ride my motorcycle even more. I would LOVE to test this product out with my motorcycle. I have hard cases and a top case that I would spray, as well as the wheel wells and maybe the fenders for extra flash – and definitely my helmet. I ride my motorcycle a lot at night and am often alone, which makes me more vulnerable. My motorcycle is not a “loud Harley”, so I have to always keep my head on a swivel and be extra aware. Last year a dear friend of mine was hit by a car while on her motorcycle. (Thankfully she walked away from the accident) The driver told her he turned into her because he “only saw one light”. If she had been on a bicycle, she would not be here today. I have had a few close calls like this as well dodging cars. This could be the thing to make just enough difference to save lives. If you don’t select me, I look forward to hearing and seeing those who do get to test it post their results.

Please let me know where I can purchase this paint. What a wonderful idea! I have a rescue horse I adopted 2 years ago. I can only ride her in the evenings because I care for my elderly parents full time during the day. Unfortunately, the boarding stable is along a highway and I have to ride down the narrow shoulder to access the bridle trails. We often get caught out after dark, and I find myself riding back along that highway, full of blind curves and speeding cars and headlights. I do wear a reflective vest and band around my helmet, but it’s not enough. With paint like this, I could spray my saddle, saddle pad, bridle parts, and more. This would make a huge difference in our safety, and your product would be saving two lives rather than one. Mine and my horse’s. Thank you so much for bringing this product to market. I can’t express my gratitude. Go Volvo! 😀

Being an avid road cyclist, wife and a mother of two teenage boys who ride their bikes everywhere they need to go, Volvo LifePaint is a blessing to everyone who uses the road. Having been hit by a car while riding my bike two years ago, being visible, although we do our best with blinking lights and reflective clothing, is not always easy. Spraying the entire surface of my and my children’s bikes, as well as all helmets and shoes, would be something akin to a huge neon sign reading, “I’M HERE. DON’T HIT ME!” Now, if only we can find a way to disable texting abilities when a driver sits behind the wheel……..

I first got wind of this product from a friend, and when I watched the promo video. The first thing I thought was what a genius idea.

Where I stay my local council are re-fitting main street lights from the old yellow glow to clear white, while cars continue to shine a funky strip of LED’s looks great, but in my opinion do not give off that beam needed to travel the distance to easily see other road users.

If this paint picks up that beam quicker then job done safely, This paint, in my opinion WILL save lives and reduce accidents involving cyclists, joggers, or people, like me, just trying to get home from a late shift from work.

If I had a can of this paint I would spray it on my bike, clothing, bike helmet, places that would increase the ease of seeing me in the dark.

I think this is absolutely fab, this is thinking in the right direction. One mod I would make is spray it on the stuff I want to reflect and then see if I clear cote it, would it stay as reflective, if so the applications would be endless.
another mod could be spray your item of cycling clothing, bag etc and then apply some hydrophobic spray over to make it “water” resistant, may prolong the durability too.

Too often over here cyclists become virtual targets for car drivers and some even consider this a sport. If hit, the common excuse is that the did not see them. This product would clearly eliminate this excuse thereby giving considerable more emphasis on road safety and driver responsibility. I would definitely use this product every time I would bike anywhere. Looking forward to this coming here to Canada.

This will be our second cycle across the USA, but this time it will be a circumnavigation. Instead of 7 weeks, we will be meandering and will take 1.5 years to complete the journey. Since it is just us and a trailer, we will be riding in all types of weather and levels of light.

This is an ingenious invention that will save a lot of lives and make it much safer for us bike riders who tend to ride when it starts getting a bit dark. Great invention, kudos to the inventor!!!! Very excited!!!

There has been a increase of deaths in bicycle riders in Miami, Florida. So much so that legislature is being passed for baricades and walls for bikers. I don’t want to get run over. I will use it wisely.

It would be awesome to be able to wear the life paint to the Electric Run that I am running in Barcelona on the 10th of October!

And for those of you saying you will spray it on your pets, I hope you realize that it might be toxic. If you won’t spray your body, please do not spray theirs! Anything you spray on your pets fur gets absorbed into their body via the fur. Look it up.

I would like to paint my mother in all because her new flat is unfortunately located in the middle of city forest with many many bikers but lack of lights. I’m afraid of her (69) – she helps me with my kids, therefore she returns from our place almost every day in the evening…
I would like also to paint my Suzuki Sixteen, because of my safety by night riding….

Safety for us cyclists is a matter of life (or death), I was hit already a couple times by cars speeding up or turning cutting me off.
At night cycling in major cities , and even a peaceful stroll, can be such an issue. I want to try it definitely!
